Amazon starts selling Kindle e-reader in the UK
New-generation units available from 27 August
Amazon is to start selling its Kindle e-reader in the UK from 27 August. The company has introduced two new models that are smaller and lighter, with 20% faster page turns and 50% better contrast. The 3G model retails at £149, and the new Kindle Wi-Fi at £109.
Kindle was launched in the US in 2007 and has been the number one bestselling item on Amazon.com for two years running. The retailer says it is the most wished for, most gifted product, and has the most 5-star reviews of any item on Amazon.com.
The new Kindle has a 21% smaller body and 6-inch reading area. The product is 15% lighter in weight, at just 247 grams, and offers up to a month of battery life. Amazon said it has doubled the storage to 3,500 books.
“Readers are going to do a double take when they see Kindle's bright new screen and feel how remarkably light the smaller design feels in one hand," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder & CEO. "If you don't need the convenience of 3G wireless, we have an incredible new price point, at £109 for Kindle Wi-Fi.”
Amazon will also launch the new UK Kindle Store on 27th August, offering “the biggest selection and lowest prices of any e-bookstore in the UK.” Customers will be able to choose from over 400,000 books, including new releases and 85 of the 100 Nielsen UK Bestsellers.
